This gifted young dramatic soprano’s voice has been described as “Gloriously commanding” (La Scena Musicale), “Sumptuous” (ArtsSF.com), and “soaring” (The Oakland Tribune). Ms. Makerov’s upcoming engagements include making her highly anticipated return to Opera Theater Saint Louis to sing the role of Lady Macbeth in Verdi’s Macbeth under the baton of Stephen Lord.
Most recently Ms. Makerov made her Houston Grand Opera debut singing the role of Gerhilde and covering Karita Mattila as Sieglinde in Wagner’s Die Walküre with Patrick Summers conducting and returned to the Los Angeles Opera to cover the title role in Daniel Catan’s Florencia en el Amazonas. In the 2012-2013 season the artist made her Los Angeles Opera debut singing Senta in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer with James Conlon conducting, sang the role of Sieglinde in Wagner’s Die Walküre with American Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Leon Botstein and sang the roles of Chrysothemis in Strauss’s Elektra and The Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors with Des Moines Metro Opera. Additionally, she brought her internationally acclaimed Tosca to the Canadian Opera Company, made her debuts with Lyric Opera of Chicago and Opera Theater Saint Louis singing the roles of The Mother in Humperdink’s Hansel and Gretel and The Queen of Hearts in Unsuk Chin’s Alice in Wonderland, respectively.
Ms. Makerov has garnered outstanding critical acclaim singing the title role in Dvořák’s Rusalka with the Canadian Opera Company and the Český Krumlov International Music Festival. The National Post raved “Soprano Julie Makerov as Rusalka is heartbreaking as a willful young forest spirit.” She has sung with the Metropolitan Opera where she covered the roles of Gerhilde, Lady in Waiting, The Shopkeeper, and Madame Peronskaya in the productions of Die Walküre, Macbeth and War and Peace. Ms. Makerov’s other notable operatic engagements include Freia in Das Rheingold with Canadian Opera Company, Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus with Seattle Opera and Sarasota Opera, the title role in Tosca and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni with Sarasota Opera, Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly with Palm Beach Opera, Sarasota Opera and Opera San Jose, and Leonora in Il Trovatore, Alice Ford in Falstaff, and Fiordiligi in Così fan Tutte with Opera San Jose.
